The Russian authorities intend to increase the volume of air transportation to Abkhazia. As stated at the Abkhazia Investment in the Future forum, new flights from Russian cities will open in May 2026. This was stated by Deputy Head of the Ministry of Economic Development Dmitry Vakhrukov.
Since April 3, the “North Wind” has already added additional flights on the Moscow- Sukhum route. And next month, other cities of the Russian Federation will be added to them. The reason is the launch of an updated airport terminal in the capital of the Republic of Abkhazia.
Tour operators predict that about 200 thousand travelers will arrive as part of groups, and about 100 thousand more on their own. The airport in Sukhum (built in the 60s, near the village of Dranda) has been idle since 1993. Regular service was restored in May 2025.
