For passengers who will fly from Singapore, tickets will become more expensive in 2026, as the amount of the “green fee” will be added to their cost.
The city-state plans to expand the use of SAF fuel. It is environmentally friendly. According to Transport Minister Chi Hong Tat, who spoke at the industry summit, it is planned that in this way it will be possible to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by ⅔. The collection is planned to be implemented from 2026, and the expected SAF utilization rate should reach 3-5% in 2030, compared with 1% at the beginning of the reform.
Now the cost of such alternative non-oil fuel, which is obtained from food waste and other raw materials, exceeds the price of aviation kerosene by about 5 times. The high cost is caused by the complexity of production. The share of SAF, which contains vegetable oil, now accounts for 0.2% of the total kerosene market. The plans are to reach 65% by 2050 in order to achieve zero CO2 emissions. Experts believe that for this ambitious goal, it will be necessary to invest, according to various estimates, $1.45 – $3.2 trillion dollars.
Passengers buying economy class tickets, due to the introduction of the “green fee”, will have to pay more for a flight to Bangkok by 3 local dollars, which is $ 2.2. For the premium class, the fees will be higher. Their size will be determined depending on the flight range and class. An economy class flight to Tokyo will cost more by 6, and to London by 16 Singapore dollars.
